Tell the City Council--No Charlie Kirk Memorial in Scottsdale

The City of Scottsdale is seriously considering a Charlie Kirk Memorial - read: Conservative leaders propose Charlie Kirk memorial.

While the Scottsdale City Council is supposed to be nonpartisan, we have a conservative supermajority on the Council today, due to groups like Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA, which helped get them elected in 2024. Mayor Lisa Borowsky said she is already in discussions with Turning Point about a memorial.

There are a plenty of reasons why this is a bad idea, and we need everyone to write to the City Council and tell them why you are against a Charlie Kirk memorial in Scottsdale.

Here are some of the reasons you might include in your email:

  • Voters should decide who gets a memorial and how it is paid for (taxpayer dollars or private donations).

  • A memorial is a reflection on the people and the city that it calls home.  The decision to erect one should not be made by a handful of politicians.

  • There should be a 5-year waiting period after a death before a memorial is considered.  This is the policy of the state of Arizona, and one that Scottsdale should adopt. The passage of time often makes for better decisions.

  • Kirk's right wing views such as his opposition to abortion, gun control, DEI programs and LGBTQ rights may not comport with your own

  • Kirk advocated for Christian nationalism, which is antithetical to our Constitutional values of separation of church and state and equality for all.

  • Kirk promoted the white replacement conspiracy theory which claims that Jews and others have a deliberate plot to cause the extinction of white people through forced assimilation and mass immigration of non-whites.

  • Kirk made false claims about election fraud in 2020

  • Kirk grew up in Illinois, not in AZ.  He made no contribution to the City of Scottsdale, so there is no apparent reason why he should have a memorial here.
